Modric attacks Messi after he won 2018 ballon d’or.
This year’s Ballon d’Or winner has taken a slight dig at the Barca star who was ranked 5th
Leo finished last season with La Liga and Copa del Rey titles under his belt as well winning his 5th European Golden Boot
However, France Football and FIFA awarded the Real Madrid midfielder as the best player of 2018
Modric insists by scooping the prize he has made everybody realise that football isn’t breaking goalscoring records.
Leo Messi & Cristiano Ronaldo 10-year dominance in European football was ended on December 3 when Luka Modric won the 2018 Ballon d’Or. The Croat has been complemented by FIFA Best Player of 2018 Award following his performance at the World Cup in Russia where his side were beaten 4-2 by Spain in the final.
While Leo Messi helped Barca to add La Liga and Copa del Rey titles by scoring 34 goals in the Spanish top flight, Modric believes football isn’t breaking goalscoring records.
“It makes me happy that people have finally recognised everything I’ve achieved in my sports career,” Modric told GQ, as cited by Goal.
“I’ve had to win many things to make it happen and only then others have realised that football is not just goals, goals and goals.”
“I’ve been surrounded by doubts since my childhood,” the Ballon d’Or winner added. “Because of my physique, because of my height…
“Some thought those elements were important to succeed in life and in football, but I never doubted myself.”
The 33-year-old went on to comment his own brilliance one again which helped him to play for the world’s best club, what is quite an arguable statement considering Madrid’s struggles after Ronaldo’s departure to Juventus.
“Thanks to that trust and that faith in myself, I came to the best club in the world,” he explained. “At the beginning, many people didn’t believe in me either, it’s part of my life, always surrounded by doubts, always hearing that no I won’t reach the top.
“All the recognition, such as the FIFA World Player or the Ballon d’Or, are worth much more when you are aware that nobody has given you anything. Nothing has been given to me by anyone, I’ve had to work for it.”
